By anyone’s standards, Dr. John Hixson can be described as a modern-day renaissance physician – and shows no signs of slowing down. An accomplished clinical neurologist, associate professor at UCSF, American Academy of Neurology Committee member, published author and public speaker, John’s CV boasts a seemingly endless number of accolades that spans more than two decades. Dr. Hixson continues to demonstrate unbridled passion, focusing primarily on epilepsy patient care – his chosen field of clinical care and study. While maintaining his clinical practice at the San Francisco VA, John also actively conducts pioneering research in the UCSF community. He is primarily focused on academically evaluating digital monitoring technologies for seizure detection and quantification.

Whether through his service to international organizations like the AAN or his clinical and research efforts with renowned institutions like UCSF and the SF Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Dr. Hixson’s credentials are impeccable. John displays a deep commitment to addressing the unmet needs of the epilepsy patient community.

Notably, John was bestowed dual honors as Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology both at UCSF and the SF Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Working on the frontline of e-world technology and healthcare policy, Dr. Hixson also serves as the Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Clinical Informatics at the SF VAMC. Additionally, he previously served as the National Clinical Director for the VHA Health Informatics Initiative (hi2) based in Washington DC. Through these multiple roles, John directs the development of patient-facing digital health technologies for the Veteran patient community. He is also a founding faculty member of the mHealth Faculty Group at UCSF.

John received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
